The most thrilling and anticipated game of the World Cup group stage B so far & possibly from the entire of the Group Stages. With all the build-up and the drama surrounding the game, Portugal vs Spain, turned out to be an even more dramatic and sensational game then fans would have thought initially. The game ended as a 3-3 draw and was an entertaining encounter between the two European neighbors. It was a fair result for both sides.
Big game player Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a late goal to complete his hattrick for Portugal, whereas, Diego Costa scored a brace, and Nacho Fernandez (playing at the Right Back position) scored a rare sumptuous volley for Spain.
The game started with an early penalty – awarded for a foul on Cristiano Ronaldo in the 4th minute and the former Man Utd forward made no mistake and slotted past current Man Utd goalkeeper David De Gea in the right corner. Spain took more control of the ball and Diego Costa capitalized on a weak clearance from Pepe and scored Spain’s first goal with a low driven shot to the bottom left corner.
Portugal took the lead again through a left-footed shot and a rare goalkeeping error by De Gea, right before the halftime. But Diego Costa managed to head in from a close range after the ball was put in back from a Silva free-kick.
The game restarted with the score 2-2 and suddenly the Spanish side felt more freedom in attack. They scored another goal within 5 mins of their previous goal, to give them the lead for the first time in the game and making the score 3-2. It was Nacho this time and Real Madrid defender fired in his first goal for the national side and what a way to score. He fired a rocket on the half-volley from the right side of the box to the post and inside. Portuguese keeper Rui Patricio couldn’t save it even with four hands.
Things were getting scarier from the Portugal Perspective and Manager Bento decided to change things around by adding fresh legs in the form of Joao Mario and Ricardo Quaresma into the fray.
David Silva was the liveliest from the Spanish players and often danced his way around the Portuguese defense and saw his shot go just over the crossbar. But, it was Cristiano Ronaldo that stole the headlines in the 88th minute with an impeccable free-kick to the top right corner, leaving De Gea no chance.
Portugal tried to win it in the added time but Ronaldo missed the target in the dying moments of the game with a header going just wide.
This was one of hell of a game from a neutral perspective and night to remember for all spectators. Brilliant and world-class entertainment from both the teams and sheer quality in all the goals scored. The VAR feature was made to use on two goals for Spanish side but they survived them both. This game was a perfect representation of a World Cup classic and a sneak peek of what’s to come ahead in this tournament.
Iran tops the group with their win over Morocco earlier today. It will be exciting to see what happens next in this group.
