Colombia – England: Is Football Coming home?

Favorite (No Ratings Yet)

One of the best games in the Round of 16 is also the last game. Colombia and England will face each other to determine which team will be the remaining team to play in the quarterfinals. The winner of this match will face Sweden.

English fans are pretty loud these past weeks and with a reason. England finally plays great football, with a clear idea and is one of the contenders for the title. They are saying that ” football will finally come home ” meaning that England will finally win the second World Cup trophy. Of course, England is the home of football because that’s the country where this sport was discovered.

They had very good qualifications and finally have a modern coach. Gareth Southgate revolutionized England’s way of playing and brought great results. His team won against Panama and Tunisia and only lost to Belgium when he rested almost all the starters.

Losing to Belgium could maybe turn out to be a good thing for England, as they now have a seemingly easier path to the final. Belgium will need to win against Brazil to be in the semifinals and England needs to win against Colombia and Sweden.

It is only expected that Gareth Southgate will field his eleven in the usual 3-5-2 formation. Sterling is the only doubtful player from the starters because he wasn’t the best in the group stage. If he doesn’t play from the start Marcus Rashford will take his position.

Expected England’s 11:

Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire; Trippier, Henderson, Lingard, Alli, Young; Sterling, Kane.

Kane is the best goalscorer at the moment with 5 goals and he will look to add another to his tally tonight.

On the other side, Colombia had more turbulent group stage performance. They started with a loss against Japan. They didn’t really play bad in that game, but they played with 10 players in the majority of the game because Carlos Sanchez received a red card early in the match.

After that game, they absolutely crashed Poland with 3-0 and they were at their best when it mattered the most, winning 1-0 over Senegal. Falcao, James and Quintero were Colombia’s best attacking players in the group. However, James was substituted off in the game against Senegal and is doubtful for this match. He couldn’t finish training yesterday and if he plays today, he will probably play as a substitution in the second half.

The only question in Colombia’s team is who will be the partner of Carlos Sanchez in the middle. Uribe, Barrios and Lerma are all possibilities to replace the injured Abel Aguilar.

Expected Colombia’s 11:

Ospina; Arias, D. Sanchez, Mina, Mujica; Carlos Sanchez, Uribe, Quintero, Cuadrado, Muriel; Falcao.

England will play tonight against an attacking minded team. There will be spaces to exploit and if Kane keeps his form he should punish the Colombians. Colombia without James is not the same team and everything will depend on Quintero in the middle. He had some great games until now, but he has a reputation of disappearing in big matches. The Colombians should hope that this will not happen tonight.

England should go through in a game with lots of goals
